Kara no Shoujo Ramblings (SPOILERS)

Foreword

Blog inactive for more than 2 months, Tsun said he’d be back on the 29th but I haven’t seen him, I’m getting rid of the “A closer look at…” category so I can use more amusing titles when (if) I fully revive the blog. (As if it was ever alive)

Rather than do full fledged eroge reviews or so much shit, I intend to take it slowly at first and keep it to impressions for now.
As for this post, it’s actually a ramble I wrote in my diary. Since even in my diary I’ve been taking my non-existent readers too much in consideration I decided to just let my thoughts flooooooooow onto the notepad again this once, and it felt good. I realized that if I don’t restrict myself like I did in the past I can write better material in my diary that I can use as a base for an actual post after.

In this case though, I am not planning on writing a review of Kara no Shoujo. SO RAMBLE ON!

Warning: Do NOT continue reading if you don’t want to be spoiled!

Firstly, my spoilerish synopis:

Kara no Shoujo is a grotesque, gory detective eroge by Innocent Grey and translated into English by Mangagamer. It has quite the somber atmosphere and portrays little hope, but overwhelming despair. Only a masochist
is able to go through all that without going insane. (Since masochists are already somewhat insane, in a way)

The protagonist is Tokisaka Reiji, a former cop, now detective. A friend who is a cop asks him to help them with an investigation involving a bizarre murder where body parts are chopped off and disposed of in peculiar ways except one part. It is later discovered that the body parts disposed of weren’t from a single person and that the disposal methods were based on literature, specifically a manuscript called “Dante’s Divine Comedy“.

RAMBLE ON!

“WHY, WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT!?” (The protagonist never actually said this)

There are barely any characters in the game you can save from dying. The first characters that pop into my head are Kuchiki Touko, Yuki, and Kazuna; but even then Touko will ALWAYS lose her limbs.

It’s all her fault.. it’s all the fault of THAT OTHER TOUKO who threw away her medicine. I hated her until the very end, apart from the bad ending with her; at that point I didn’t hate her (as much) anymore.
Why? Because she wasn’t even worth being hated, I pitied her. Her mind was as distorted as Michael Jackson’s nose. (First thing I could think of, sorry)

Speaking of bad endings, I got one on my first playthrough. Just by experiencing that one playthrough and bad ending I already knew that this game isn’t doable without a walkthrough, unless you’re some kind of super masochist with the pride of Katsuragi Keima. (Though I can’t imagine him ever playing a game like this)

Even the endings that aren’t considered “bad” are probably worse than the average bad ending you see in other eroge. No, Kara no Shoujo is definitely not a joke.

“GIVE ME MY TOUKO BACK!” (The protagonist never actually said this either)

Side note: Mangagamer actually transliterated Touko’s name as “Toko” instead; I do not like.

Anyway, just because the endings never end 100% happy for our hero doesn’t mean they don’t make the story good.
Personally, I think the one involving Touko’s head cut off by Katsuragi Shin, also known as Mamiya Shinji might’ve been the best of all. Apparently the trigger to this ending was the photo or postcard of the lake nearby the chapel Touko and Shinji used to live at you can find during the investigation of Shinji’s room. It would’ve been very easy to overlook this item if it wasn’t for the walkthrough.

It may be a exceptionally cruel ending compared to the other ones, but much better than the lazy conclusions where Touko hadn’t been found at all. There’s also the ending where Touko hadn’t been
hurt by Shinji at all and returned safely, but it didn’t give the same impact I felt with the other ending during those scenes where Shinji dropped the black egg, the picture showing Touko and Shinji from when they were small, and the developments of Shinji’s wicked mind.

Like many games do, Kara no Shoujo has a true end route. Unfortunately, it wasn’t like I had expected it to be.
Before I even got to doing the true route I asked ADD and lolicon friend for some vague opinions such as “How was it? Was it good?” without actually getting spoiled. Their reactions weren’t exactly the most happy ones.

Kara no Shoujo, I am disappoint(ed) and impressed at the same time. It was a rough but interesting ride, tears of rage were shed, expectations were not met, hope eventually turned into despair and yet they got me to 99% clear a game (with more than one route) since months, or even years.

Innocent Grey should change their name to Guilty Grey.

I was being sarcastic, of course I know who Tsun is.
To me, Tsun has been gone for at least 3 months by now. He only went on Skype for a bit like one month later and thought he already told me that he’d be gone. (Yes, he was on business trips and then on vacation)

You could also check his Twitter: http://twitter.com/TsunTsun10
He started tweeting again since recently it seems.

    • #9 by Jun on October 7, 2011 - 5:17 PM

Hahah no I’m just joking. :P (for now anyway) Though it’d be great to have Tsun writing again. Naturally, I am a bit disappointed since what’s the point of running a blog TOGETHER if the other doesn’t write? >_> Then again, I haven’t written much the past months either, lol. THEN AGAIN, my motivation isn’t getting any better if he keeps disappearing and appearing for a day or two only to disappear again.

Even worse is that it’s so hard to contact him, I find it really sad to say this but if this goes on I might have to take a step forward myself..

      TSUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUN. DX

I actually liked Kara no Shoujo a lot. I enjoy a good mystery, and, in all honesty, this gives Umineko a run for its money. All the characters were great (save for the other Toko, who a friend of mine and I refer to as Jerk Toko), and the mystery was well presented. It really felt like the game encouraged you to try and think about the case alongside Reiji, especially with the inclusion of Investigation and Inferences modes. As Furudo Erika said, “the reader has the right to enjoy thinking as well”.

Ironically, my main complaint with the game is the Investigation segments. The idea itself is good, but it wasn’t executed very well. It’s a good idea for the developers to allow the reader to look around for clues, but just like you said, it’s impossible to progress correctly without a walkthrough, making the whole thing essentially pointless. If that’s the case, it’d be best if the developers scrapped the Investigation mode and went only with the Inference mode.

But back to the story, I was not surprised at the conclusion of any of the endings, considering how this game is an Utsuge. That didn’t stop me from raging at my limbless Toko. D: Can’t the poor girl catch a break? Sheesh.
Also, I noticed that this game employs a rare trope in eroge: you can’t fuck your sister. You can get a peek of her boobs (or lack thereof), but that’s it. It’s quite refreshing.

Another thing that caught my attention in the true ending is how the story leaves some things ambiguous on purpose. Namely, did Rokushiki influnce the killers into commiting the murders? After all, it can’t be just some convenient coincidence that he was both of the dudes’ shrink. The story never gives you an answer to that. I dunno about you guys, but I enjoy some ambiguity in my story-telling. It makes you think even after the story ended, which is awesome, and very clever. A good example of “And the Walrus was Paul”.

I have to say that I was still disappointed at the sudden conclusion. Reiji confronts Rokushiki, doesn’t shoot him. Guy goes to jail. THE END. Not very epic. Though the events preceding it were quite good, especially with twist with Stella.

And speaking of Stella, how come she doesn’t get an H-scene? Bummer. D:
Then again, if she did get one, then she’d probably die a horrible death or something.

Thinking alongside Reiji is what made me despair even more after getting the first ending, so I decided not to think too hard anymore and just play. XD

I was just a tad surprised too that there was no H-scene for his imouto, but didn’t really mind. I can’t say the same thing for my lolicon friend though.. he was like “OHH THAT SUCKS SO BADLY, WHY IS THERE NO H-SCENE FOR HER!? FUCK!”

Incomplete stories kind of leave me disappointed. I mean leaving some things to your imagination is fine, but when it’s highly relevant to the still ongoing story it’s a freaking waste. I want to know what happened, not what could have happened after that.

A good example would be Yukiko’s head, a lot of emphasis was put into Reiji’s hate for Rokushiki but in the end nothing mindblowing happened and they didn’t even mention anything about her head after that. A last battle between Reiji and Rokushiki would’ve been nice, with focus on Yukiko’s head and Misa’s body that got stolen by Rokushiki.

Stella is too airheaded and innocent for a H-scene or murder, I’m glad she had been kept pure unlike many unfortunate girls. When I see Stella I can comfortably say: 大丈夫です。(^.^)

As far as I remember, it was implied that Rokushiki ate her head… I also remember that the flashback implied he made his abortion patients unknowingly eat their own fetuses, or something like that… I don’t quite remember. But I do remember the thing with Yukiko’s head. Also, for a moment I was under the impression that he had hid her head in a safe… I dunno why. o_o

    But what baffles me the most is the way they found her body in the flashback… I mean, C’MON SOMEONE MUST’VE SEEN HIM! IS HE LIKE A MAGE OR SOMETHING?? ;A;

Oh yes yes. Stella’s too pure and moe for her to be corrupted. Though I believe the Innocent Grey fanbook has a short story where Reiji does her… You can find it on oreno.imouto, yes.
